It's been long expected that Facebook would announce a phone, and today they did, but there is more to it than simply a new phone. Facebook's new home screen user interface ("Home") will be made available for a number of cell phones already in people's pockets, such as the popular Samsung Galaxy S3 and soon to be released Galaxy S4.
Facebook's "Home" becomes your phone's home screen, bringing social media to the forefront of your user experience. You can get this in two ways; you can buy the new HTC First phone (AT&T only) which already has Facebook Home integrated into the system or, if you have a compatible phone, you can download Facebook Home from the Google Play store when it becomes available in just a few days.
I think Facebook Home will be a huge hit among phone users who currently spend a good amount of time checking Facebook notifications and news feeds. This will make it a much more integrated experience and put these functions immediately in view of the user. For people who are currently not very interested in social media, I don't think this will change their minds. If you don't like Facebook, you won't be converted just because it is prettier and easier to use.
Facebook Home will be available on select phones April 12th, 2013.
